Readers Ride Polar Express

Holly Hill, SC (WLTX) -- Readers in Orangeburg School District Three took a ride on the Polar Express, where a wintry scene had been set by educators.
"All aboard!" The conductor calls. "All aboard for the Polar Express!"
Educators capitalized on holiday excitement among students to also gain steam in literacy. With paintings on the walls and sound effects in the air, teachers turned the Holly Hill Depot into a storybook wonderland. Guest readers shared the book, "Polar Express" with elementary school students.
"We are developing literacy skills in an area of our district in which we were deficient," explained Executive Director of Curriculum, Bonnie Moskos.
Educators in the district say their initiatives have paid off with higher test scores and a greater love for reading.
"One of the students actually said that I think santa was trying to get us to see something else, other than gift giving, I think he wanted us to believe in something," Superintendent Cynthia Cash-Greene said. "I think the kids have really enjoyed and I think we've hooked them in some sense."
